Photodynamic therapy is a safe and non-invasive therapy that treats a variety of skin conditions using both a topical solution and light. We first apply a topical photosensitizing agent – 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) or methyl aminolevulinate – for absorption by the skin and affected cells. We then target the area with a specific type of light at a precisely calibrated wavelength and with an active mode of oxygen that eliminates the diseased tissue.
Treated Conditions and Treatment Options
PDT is a versatile treatment for a myriad of skin conditions:
- Precancerous actinic keratoses
- Acne
- Rosacea
- Sun damage
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Blotchy pigmentation
Benefits of PDT
Photodynamic therapy is generally safe and effective in treating several conditions. On average, one treatment session takes no more than 30 to 90 minutes and minimal downtime associated with treatment.
Other benefits include:
- Precise targeting of unhealthy tissue
- Non-invasive (no needles or surgery)
- Performed as an outpatient procedure
- Little to no scarring after healing
- Well tolerated
- Excellent for both medical or cosmetic skin conditions
Typically, you can expect significant results, including:
- Improved moderate to severe sun damage
- Elimination of actinic keratoses
- Softer skin texture
- Balanced skin tone
- Reduction of acne
- Smoother skin
Furthermore, side effects are typically minimal and temporary, including redness, swelling, skin discoloration, and sensitivity to the sun for 2-3 days (during which time you are strongly urged to avoid sun exposure as much as possible). You may also experience peeling for 1-2 weeks as your skin heals.
For optimal results, an average treatment plan is typically a minimum of 2-3 sessions about 4-6 weeks apart, though the extent of your condition as well as your aesthetic goals may warrant a different plan. For example, you may be satisfied with one treatment for actinic keratosis. You may also want to undergo additional sessions periodically to maintain your rejuvenated appearance.
