Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Dermal Filler?

Also called an injectable facial filler, a dermal filler is a soft gel that is injected into the skin and is designed to rejuvenate your appearance.

Cosmetic facial fillers are most commonly composed of the following:

Hyaluronic acid (HA) – a naturally-occurring substance in your body that hydrates the skin

Calcium hydroxyapatite – a mineral-like substance that adds volume to the skin, while also stimulating the production of natural collagen for long-lasting results.

Poly-l-lactic acid – an easily-absorbed synthetic substance that stimulates collagen production in the skin for results that last even after the filler has been safely absorbed

Who is a Candidate for a Dermal Filler Procedure?

If you’re looking to reduce various types of wrinkles and facial creases, then dermal fillers could be the right treatment for you. In addition, many patients choose dermal fillers to:

  • Improve facial symmetry
  • Add definition and volume
  • Enhance facial contours
  • Increase smoothness
  • Tighten loose skin

What Conditions do Facial Fillers Treat?

Dermal fillers are ideal for a range of skin conditions, including wrinkles and sagging skin in the following areas:

  • Cheekbones
  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
  • Marionette lines (lines under the mouth)
  • Temples
  • Under eye area
  • Lip augmentation
  • Lip lines
  • Jawline

This “finishing touch” filler can be added to a lip injection treatment that includes other fillers like Juvéderm ® XC.

Restylane – Restylane is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler that improves facial structure, defines lip lines and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and light scarring that lasts 6-9 months.

Sculptra – Sculptra is a gel-like substance made of poly-L-lactic acid used to correct shallow-to-deep wrinkles and folds on the face. It is a biostimulatory aesthetic injectable that helps stimulate your own natural collagen production to smooth facial wrinkles and improve skin tightness, for a refreshed look.

Although each procedure will vary depending on the patient, in general, you can expect treatment to last no more than 30 minutes. Many patients report experiencing minimal pain, however, you can choose to have a local numbing agent applied to make your session even more comfortable.
