Position Summary:

The Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) is an integral member of the Pima Dermatology care team. In collaboration with and under the supervision of our board-certified dermatologists, the APP provides high-quality, evidence-based care to patients with a wide range of general dermatology needs. Nature of Work:

Advanced Practice Providers diagnose, treat, and educate patients on dermatologic care for conditions
of the skin, hair, and nails.

Clinical Practice:

  1. Perform skin examinations, biopsies, incision, and other dermatologic procedures within approved scope of practice
  2. Diagnose and treat numerous dermatology problems such as acne vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, tinea pedis/cruris/corporis, onychomycosis, photo damaged skin, actinic keratosis and seborrheic keratosis among others
  3. Consult with staff physicians and other healthcare team members to evaluate, create, and implement patient health care treatment and plans
  4. Perform cultures and microscopic laboratory examinations of skin, hair, and nails (i.e. scabies and KOH prep)
  5. Avulse nails
  6. Electrodessicate and curettage lesions (medical/cosmetic), use liquid nitrogen on lesions
    (medical/cosmetic), perform wound debridement/management and shave lesions (medical/cosmetic)
  7. Perform injections (intralesional, subcuticular, intramuscular)
  8. Perform assessment of internal diseases that contribute to dermatological skin conditions, order laboratory tests, refer and/or collaborate with patient’s primary care providers
  9. Receive and interpret diagnostic tests to determine and evaluate patient’s condition
  10. Assist physicians in all medical, surgical, and, if applicable, cosmetic and laser procedures
  11. Monitor and report development or changes in patients’ health conditions and maintain accurate records of patients’ medical history
  12. Carry out different dermatology procedures such as cryo-surgery to actinic keratosis, verrucea vulgaris, shave biopsy, simple wound closure, and punch biopsy among others
  13. Direct patients with complicated issues to more specialized health centers or hospitals for proper
    treatment
  14. Ability to show care and concern for all patients through an empathetic lens and through a framework of cultural competency ensuring that biases are suspended and making every effort to increase comfort for the patient
  15. Exhibit good human relations skills to interact freely with patients and earn their trust
  16. Showcase patience in dealing with patients’ situations
  17. Demonstrate high emotional intelligence when engaging with patients, the public, and practice staff
  18. Adhere to Advanced Practice Providers Surgical Guidelines

Saff Responsibilities:

  1. Mentor and participate in the coaching and training of Registered Nurses, Medical Assistants, and other health care support staff as it relates to medical terminology, procedures, prescriptions, products, procedural assistance, and pathology
  2. Observe and enforce that self and other staff members are following HIPAA, OSHA, and all generally accepted medical and safety standards and protocols
  3. Take after-hours clinical calls, as appropriate, to ensure continuity of care
  4. When needed, participate in writing and editing patient literature, practice blogs, etc.
  5. Promote Pima Dermatology by staffing community events, public health projects and or public lectures
  6. Conduct himself/herself in a professional manner at work- and work-related events
  7. Maintain high integrity and ethics, always
  8. Participate in bi-annual Open House and other Practice Building Events/Activities
  9. Maintain Strict Confidentiality
  10. Fulfill other duties as requested by Medical Director and/or Practice Administrator

Performance Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Expert knowledge of skin, hair, and nails
  2. Skills to diagnose and treat skin, hair, and nail conditions
  3. Excellent time management and multitasking skills
  4. Ability to provide clear patient counseling and education
  5. Ability to effectively manage support staff and work collaboratively across all positions and departments
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to patient-centered care
  7. Ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced clinical environment
  8. High aptitude, high emotional intelligence, and a collaborative and growth mindset will be considered.

Education:

  1. Master’s degree Diploma from an accredited college/university and physician assistant or nursing program
  2. If a Nurse Practitioner, an unrestricted Arizona License to practice as a Nurse Practitioner
  3. If a Physician Assistant, an unrestricted Arizona License to practice as a Physician Assistant
  4. Current DEA registration (or eligibility to obtain)
  5. Be recognized by one of the following: American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), or Arizona State
  6. Association of Physician Assistants
  7. Current certification per national and state requirements

Experience:

  1. Dermatology experience preferred; strong interest in dermatology required
  2. 1 + years of Electronic Medical Record systems experience
  3. Knowledge of disease processes and prevention
